Conservation in Action

Autumn is here and the Conservation Crew are gearing up to put the Museum to bed for another year.
The season may be ending, but our work is just beginning.
Throughout the winter, essential projects will be taking place to safeguard our collections and the stories they tell. We will be busy caring for, and redisplaying our collection, transforming our workshop, and planning our new exhibitions, ready to welcome you back in spring 2025.
Come and chat to the Conservation Crew
The Conservation Crew will be working around the site until the end of the season, undertaking conservation cleaning and scheduled maintenance of our large object collection.
Come and visit us in the Exhibition Halls on Saturday 28th and find out what it takes to maintain the static engines. Chat to the team about the work they are doing and learn how we protect our objects for the enjoyment and education of future generations. You might be surprised at everything that is involved. Live conservation work takes place until 2pm.
‘Behind closed doors’ tours
Are you curious about what goes on behind closed doors between seasons? If so, dig out your thermals, hats and gloves, and watch this space. This year we will be giving visitors the chance to get involved in our off season activities. Watch a shunt, see conservation in action, see how an exhibition is hung, and maybe even roll up your sleeves and get involved.
Experience a different side to the Museum of Scottish Railways this winter. Details of all events coming soon.
