Opening Doors To New Visitor Experiences This September

What’s going on behind this usually closed door…?
On Thursday 4 September, our team unlocked the cabs of our Class 91 No. 91131 Sir Henry Royce to make plans for a brand-new visitor experience.
No. 91131 is part of our Recognised Collection and has been on static display in the engine hall since its acquisition in March 2023. For nearly three decades, it worked the East Coast Main Line between London and Scotland. On 2 June 1995, it powered the UK’s fastest passenger train, reaching 154.1 mph on Stoke Bank and completing the run from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley in 3 hours 29 minutes. Since making its final journey north, its engines have been quiet — until now.
On 26 September, visitors will be invited through the crew door for the first time and into a 3D immersive sound-and-stories experience that will let 91131 be fully heard again.
Our task this week was to plan the lighting for the cabs, equipment tunnel and bogies ahead of the big day — but as the photographs show, the engine lit up a few faces even before we started.
